WHAT DO I DO IF I NEED TO PICK MY CHILD UP BEFORE SCHOOL IS OUT? –
Parents should arrive at least 30 minutes PRIOR to their child’s dismissal time. Students whose parents arrive later than 30 minutes PRIOR to dismissal time will be released at the normal dismissal time. Specifically, if your child is dismissed at 2:45 and you want to pick him or her up early, you must pick the child up no later than 2:15 p.m. This is necessary to minimize confusion and the traffic congestion that generally occurs during dismissal time.
Additionally, to minimize disruptions and interruptions to instructional time, we ask that parents limit to early pick up to emergencies or special circumstances. Parents who regularly pick their child up from school early will be asked to wait until the normal dismissal time.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I AM UNABLE TO PICK MY CHILD UP FROM SCHOOL ON TIME?
Parents who are unable to pick their children up on time should notify the school immediately. Since the school is not funded or staffed to provide supervision for students beyond the school day, students whose parents are late for pick up will be taken to the Education Valet’s Crayon Club program. Parents may pick students up as late as 6:30 p.m. in this instance. The Education Valet charges a $25.00 fee for this service. The fee must be paid at time of pick up.
ALERT: Students whose parents regularly fail to pick them up on time are taken to the Child Protective Services Office located at 6300 Chimney Rock. A CPS neglect report is filed and an investigation launched which may lead to parents being charged with child abandonment by Children’s Protective Services. Once CPS is contacted, The Rhodes School has no jurisdiction to stop the investigation process.

The link for the online student account payment system will open by Friday, September 7, 2012. The lunch application must be completed in order to set up an account to pay any school fees.
HOW DO I PAY FOR MY CHILD’S LUNCH OR FEES UNTIL THE ONLINE SYSTEM OPENS
Until the online system opens, parents who need to pay for lunch or other fees in cash should turn in the funds directly to the main office and obtain a receipt. Parents paying by money order place the money order in an envelope clearly labeled with the child’s name, the teacher’s name, and the amount and send the money to school with the student. The money order stub will serve as the receipt. CHECKS ARE NOT ACCEPTED. Once the online system opens, payments must be made using this method.
WHY AM I ASKED TO COMPLETE AN APPLICATION FOR FREE/REDUCED LUNCH IF I KNOW WILL NOT QUALIFY?
The eligibility requirements for free/reduced lunch are influenced by national economic conditions and therefore change frequently. Many parents who may not have previously qualified may qualified under the current year’s requirements, so it is advantageous to complete the form and allow the system to make a determination regarding eligibility.
We use information from the lunch form to help us track demographic data about our families so that we can provide better programs and services that ensure we are meeting both parent and student needs. Additionally, the demographic data is often used when writing grants that fund various school programs. No data is shared publicly or with any other organization outside the school. Parents information is NEVER sold
If Pre-K4 is all day, why are the classes referred to as A.M. and P.M.?
A.M. and P.M. refer to when your child has homeroom. The homeroom blocks are 3 hours long and are the time period during which students work with their homeroom teachers to receive direct instruction in the core content areas. The part of the day during which they are not in homeroom is spent in enrichment activities designed to extend the learning and mastery of the foundational skills and concepts they learned in the homeroom session. Enrichment classes include technology, centers, library, and p.e. Students spend approximately 30-45 minutes in each of these program areas each day. Fine art is provided on Fridays.
How long is the nap period?
The nap period is 20 minutes long. Students are allowed to lay their heads down on their desk and either sleep or simply rest. The nap time is need to help them transition from a ½ day program to a full day program with as little stress as possible. It is short because we want to start preparing students for kindergarten.
What do I need to bring for my child’s nap period?
Nothing is required for the nap period. Students are allowed to lay their heads down on their desk and either sleep or simply rest.
HOW DO I GET MY CHILD ON THE BUS?
Parents interested in participating in the school transportation program should contact the school office, and ask to have their name added to the transportation waiting list. Currently, there is no room in the transportation program; however, as we are able, we add students.
MY CHILD IS A BUS RIDER. WHAT TIME DOES HE OR SHE NEED TO BE READY EACH MORNING?
Parents were provided with pick up times prior to the start of school. If you are unsure of your child’s pick up time or stop, please contact the school and ask for extension . Additionally, due to traffic fluctuations, parents should allow a 15 minute window before and other 15 minute window after the scheduled pick up time. The bus can come anytime fifteen minutes before OR 15 minutes after the scheduled stop time. Students must be at the stop when the bus arrives. The driver will not wait on students to finish dressing, etc. The driver will arrive at the stop, blow once, wait 2 minutes, and then blow again. If the student does not immediately begin moving toward the stop, the bus will leave, and parents will be responsible for transporting the child to school that day.
MY CHILD IS A BUS RIDER. WHAT TIME CAN I EXPECT HIM OR HER TO ARRIVE AT HOME EACH AFTERNOON?
Students who ride the bus should arrive at home within one hour and fifteen minutes of their dismissal time. The trip may be somewhat longer or shorter depending upon traffic. Parents should allow at least 15 minutes both ways (15 minutes before expected time & 15 minutes after expected time).
WHEN WILL FINE ART CLASSES BEGIN?
Fine art classes begin the first day of school! The first 3-6 weeks are considered a “trial” period to allow students to determine their area of interest and their aptitude for a particular area. Students will rotate through all fine arts classes over the course of the trial period and make a final selection that will remain for the duration of the school year. Students in grades 3 and up will make selections for a 3 year period.
WHY ARE PARENTS BEING ASKED TO RAISE MONEY?
The Rhodes School offers many programs and services that traditional public schools do not, and these programs are not always funded by the state. Fundraising is an opportunity for parents to make a direct investment in their child’s education, and help ensure that we are able to continue offering the quality programs and services at the same level, even when those programs are not funded by the state.
HOW MUCH ARE WE ASKED TO RAISE? -- $1,000.00 per family
WHAT HAPPENS IF I CHOOSE NOT TO PARTICIPATE IN THE FUNDRAISERS?—Participation in the fundraisers is NOT mandatory. It is voluntary. Parents who elect not to participate will not be penalized in any way.
WHAT ABOUT PARENTS WHO HAVE MORE THAN ONE CHILD? - We are only asking each FAMILY to raise $1,000.00. Children who are part of a family with more than one child are still only responsible for $1,000.00 total.
DO WE STILL HAVE TO PAY FIELD EXPERIENCE (TRIP) FEES?
Yes, field experience (trip) fees are separate from the fundraising activities. Field EXPERIENCE (Trip) fees are $150.00 per year and help cover the cost of transportation and entry fees to the activities.
WHY DO WE HAVE TO PAY FIELD EXPEREINCE (TRIP) FEES?
Rhodes School students take a minimum of 9 field trips (called field experiences) each year. The cost of these activities include transportation and entry fees. The state does not provide all the funds needed to cover the costs, therefore, we ask parents to step in.
HOW DO I OBTAIN UP-TO-DATE AND ACCURATE INFORMATION FROM THE SCHOOL?
